5 Essential Pieces Every Man Should Own This Season

Wardrobe must-owns, according to British designer Oliver Spencer

Any man with more than a passing interest in style will be familiar with Oliver Spencer. For the past 15 years, the British fashion designer has honed an unbeatable mix of contemporary yet classic menswear staples and effortlessly smart tailoring.
Which makes him well placed to make a slightly-more-than-educated guess at the five pieces of menswear every man should have in his wardrobe this season. So, fresh from his VIP-littered AW17 show at London Fashion Week Men’s, that’s exactly what we asked him to do.

A Pair Of Made In England Shoes

“Solid, dependable and like every good dog: always there when you need them. A good pair of shoes should last you for years with some care, attention, and the occasional resole.
“Made by hand and with a Goodyear welt is ideal to last you through all weathers and many winters. Pebble grain leather adds a beautiful texture, it’s one of my favourites.”

A Bomber Jacket

“What I like about the bomber jacket is the versatility of it as a garment. It can be super luxe in suede, worn over a shirt as a smart jacket or waterproof and playful and thrown over a T-shirt for a more casual look. It can be so easily dressed up or dressed down.
“I always have a good bomber jacket or two in my collections.”

A Grandad Shirt

“This is a simple piece that goes a long way. This season, I’ve been styling them with a collarless suit and slip-on trainers for a modern look. It’s a great shirt that works well both tucked in and untucked.
“The grandad shirt is one of the first shirts that I made my name with, so it will always have a special place in my heart and wardrobe.”

A Deconstructed Blazer

“I like garments that bridge categories and seasons, and a deconstructed blazer lends itself really well to layering. Unlined, it can be easily dressed up or dressed down. You can make it your own and work it into your individual style.
“The beauty of such a lightweight piece is that it works all year round: as a lightweight summer jacket as well as under an overcoat during winter.”

An Overcoat

“And I mean a proper coat. Something above 600g/m to keep the cold winter chill out. A good coat is one of the greatest investments someone can make.
“Especially living in England, winter can seem to last from October to March some years, so if you’re wrapping up in your coat every day you should really make it a good one.”
