Summer is no time for high-maintenance manes. With soaring temps and more humidity, a simple ‘do that stays put—with minimal effort on your part—is just what the weather calls for.

The traditional cut is a classic for a reason, and it’s tough to top this cropped style in the heat. “Guys are pretty simple. They don’t like to spend a half hour when doing their hair,” says Danny Kerr, owner of Manhattan-based salon, Spiff for Men. If you’re fairly active and shower often after everyday workouts, this style is going to be an excellent option.

“Figure out what lifestyle you have and how active you are,” Kerr says. “Then get the cut and style you maintain at home.” The short look, which requires little more than a wash, followed by toweling dry, makes looking smart on a sweltering day a cinch.

The Classic Crew
Short cuts in the summer are a no-brainer, but the classic crew cut allows for more options when it comes to styling. “The classic crew cut—think Michael Fassbender—is the best summer cut,” says Boswell Scot, owner of Best Barber NYC. But, he says, you need the right head shape and product to pull it off.

If your head is oval or round, chances are this style will suit you. If you have a very square head shape or a pronounced chin or jaw, this style might accentuate those features.
Finish with a cream that will look natural. Scot recommends Malin + Goetz Sage Styling Cream, which provides a firm hold without a gel’s stiffness ($22, Malin and Goetz). The residue-free cream works well for summer styles because the natural ingredients won’t cause breakouts or irritation when you sweat, Scot says.

Short on Sides, Long on Top
This look is the best bet for a guy who doesn’t mind adding a few extra minutes to his grooming routine. Decidedly dapper but deceivingly simple, short sides allow for comfort from the heat, while a longer, styled top provides versatility.
If the classic crew doesn’t give you enough to work with, Scot offers another summer staple.“Go for a style with short sides and the top length styled off your face,” Scot says. “This will keep the sweat-trapping hair off your face, ears and neck during the hot months.”

Proportions always determine whether the look is cutting edge or traditional, adds Bumble and bumble stylist Colin McCarthy. The greater the difference between the lengths on top and side, the more dramatic the look.
