These visual tricks from Olie Arnold, style director at Mr. Porter, are based on different body types, helping to reveal exactly which swimsuit is best for letting loose and shedding those uncomfortable layers.

A bigger guy needs a simple suit. Solid, dark, or intense hues streamline your silhouette; light colors do the opposite. Same with big prints, so keep patterns subtle or vertical.
Avoid slim fits, advises Arnold, and keep the legs loose, matching the width of your hips.

Body Type: Slim
Add heft to your frame with a bold pattern, thick horizontal stripes, or a busy print. If you're 5'8" or under, you can make your legs look longer with a mid-thigh or higher inseam.
No matter what, though, what's most important is to wear what makes you feel most comfortable. On or off the beach, what you wear is up to you.
